Ässbar and Gmüesgarte

In Switzerland, about one third of all food is lost or thrown away along the food chain. Often we don't even see these food losses because, for example, fruits that are too small are already sorted out in the field, vegetables are damaged during transport, offal doesn't even make it to the market, or fresh baked goods are left on the shelf in the evening.

The Äss-Bar is still considered a pioneer in the field of the anti-foodwaste movement in Switzerland. Yesterday's bread and baked goods are given a second life. Several hundred tonnes have already been "saved" throughout Switzerland.

In the Gmüesgarte right next door, fruit and vegetables are sold that do not conform to the norm: they are too crooked, too big, too small or the wrong colour. This means that these foods do not make it into the normal trade, but their quality is impeccable.

Also part of the family is the organisation foodwaste.ch, which gives tangible tips on how to waste less food with various projects. Our food is responsible for about 40% of CO2 emissions. When we save food, we protect the climate.
