SDG 11: SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND SETTLEMENTS

Cities and settlements should provide adequate, safe and affordable housing for all and ensure basic services for all. Road safety should be increased and public transport expanded.

Sustainable cities offer recreational space for all. World cultural and natural heritage should be protected. Cities and settlements should be developed in a participatory and sustainable manner.

Reduce the environmental impact of cities in terms of waste, air pollution and noise. Cities should be built more resiliently, especially to protect people living in poverty and precarious situations against floods, earthquakes and other disasters.

Cities should strengthen linkages to peri-urban and rural settlements.

Current situation:

Worldwide: Approximately 1.3 million people die in road accidents every year. Half of them are on foot, by bicycle or motorbike. (WHO: Road traffic injuries)

Switzerland: While the richest five percent spend 10% of their income on housing, the lowest 20% of tenant households pay more than 36%. (available in German, French and Italian: Wohnfrage November 2020, Raiffeisen)
